We would like to address IST’s response to the current COVID-19 outbreak. IST is located in Michigan, where social distancing has been implemented. We typically have less than 10 people at a time in the physical office. We are taking extra precautions with hand washing and cleaning of commonly touched items like coffee pots and door handles. Our employees all have paid time off available to them, and have been encouraged to stay home if they are not feeling well, and we asked them to err on the side of caution. Many of our employees can work from home, and have also been encouraged to do so. IST is in good shape financially and does not have any debt currently, so we foresee being able to rebound quickly once the emergency has passed.
We know that many of you are out of your pools and not allowed to train. If you have equipment that needs to be repaired, we would encourage you to do that now while you don’t need it for a while. We can repair all kinds of our products from pace clocks ($150-$250 depending on the clock), SWIMSTART ($200), CTI ($250) and deck cables ($75 for the 25-pin connector or $85 per lane box). The fees include the repair of anything that is wrong with the item (replacement batteries are an additional $60), plus inspection, cleaning and testing.
To get an item repaired, call (800-835-2611) or email (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your team name and the item that needs repair. Please also include the shipping address where you would like the repaired item returned. We will email you an RMA number and instructions for packaging and shipping the item. Once it has been repaired we will reach out to you for payment information. We can accept credit cards over the phone, checks or PO numbers (if you can get one).
From our family to yours, we hope that you stay well. We will be here and ready to go once the crisis has passed. Be safe and wash your hands!
If you are looking for a new scoreboard, now is the time to buy.
IST’s numeric and alphanumeric scoreboards are 20% off!
All of our scoreboards come with a 5 year warranty. They are designed to last – the original scoreboard is now 26 years old and still in use. If there is a problem, we can repair it. Most of the time we don’t even have to come on site to do it.
This could be the last scoreboard you ever have to purchase!
Numeric Scoreboards – Starting at around $7300 for 6 lanes
IST’s SWIMWARE Numeric Scoreboards are available in one line up to 10 lane displays with 16 bright red LED characters per line. An additional scrolling line can be added to give even more functionality.
IST’s SWIMWARE Numeric Scoreboards are driven by IST’s MEETWARE or TIMEWARE Swimming and Diving Software. During swimming events, numeric boards display a running clock on Lane 1 (or on optional scrolling message line), and cumulative splits on the remaining lanes (Lane 1 split is displayed briefly, then the running clock continues). The Lane, Place and Time are displayed as a lane finishes the race.
With an optional Scrolling Message Line, the message line displays the Event number, Heat number and running clock.
Alphanumeric Scoreboards – starting around $15,700 for 6 lanes
IST’s SWIMWARE Alphanumeric Scoreboards are available in one line up to 10 lane displays with 16 or 32 bright red LED characters per line.
IST’s MEETWAREor TIMEWARE (with Hy-Tek’s MEET MANAGER) Software drive the display for swimming. Before an event, the top line scrolls the event name and number. Lane lines display the team code and name of swimmers. Names remain on the board until the first split, but team codes are displayed throughout the event. All 50 splits are shown, along with the cumulative time (32 character boards show teams, names, 50 and cumulative splits).
During diving events, the board displays the diver’s team, name, current score and place, DD’s, judges’ awards, the score for that dive, the new total score and the current leading score.
With POLOWAREWater Polo Software, the board displays the period, shot clock, exclusion clock, and home and guest scores. As events occur (scores, penalties, exclusions) the cap number and name of the player are also shown.
Use WORKWAREfor Windows to run a different workout clock on each line of the scoreboard, with an interval counter and description of the set.
Software packages include Message Board function to turn SWIMWARE Alphanumeric Scoreboards into information centers. The top line scrolls up to 1000 characters, and lane lines can show fixed or alternating messages.
All boards include a team or sponsor logo of your design. SWIMWARE Alphanumeric Scoreboards have a 5 year warranty.

IST has been involved with the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) since the early 2000’s. IST has always been partial to High School coaches and their programs. We began our business to provide reasonably priced and long-lasting equipment to high schools that didn’t have big budgets. When Dick met Mark Onstott (New Trier, IL) and Dana Abbott (Katy, TX) he was impressed with their passion for high school swimming and their work with NISCA.
All America Diving
The first thing that IST partnered with NISCA on was the All America Diving program. Diving had to be scored and tabulated by hand prior to IST coming on board. With nearly 500 divers doing 11 dives, that was a lot of calculating and it took a lot of time. Judges would watch each dive and shout out their score. A recorder would write down the scores and do the math to tally up the totals. They checked the sheets and placed them in order to determine the top 100 divers.
2011 All America Diving Judges
Beginning in 2004, IST begin providing hardware and software for scoring the dives. Now judges sit with a keypad in their hands. The operator reads the dive number, the judges watch the video of the dive and enter their scores. The computer operator reads off the final scores and the computer performs all the calculations. It allows the judges to judge more quickly and accurately. It also removes any bias caused by hearing the judges around you shout out a score. This past weekend, All America Diving judging occurred. 17 judges and 2 computer operators judged over 550 divers doing 11 dives in 2 and a half days.

Membership and other All America Programs
Once NISCA realized how much more efficient they could be, their executive board and All America chairs started brainstorming ways to make other aspects of the organization run more efficiently. In 2007 IST and NISCA partnered on creating a Membership portal to allow NISCA members to sign up for memberships online. They also made the All America Diving application an on-line process. Beginning in 2008, the entire NISCA membership list went on-line and AA Diving began accepting applications on-line.
Eve Julian is IST’s Sales and Marketing Director as well as a high school coach and NISCA member. In 2008 she made the mistake of complaining to NISCA President Lanny Landtroop about the state of the NISCA website. Lanny talked Eve into becoming NISCA’s first Webmaster. He put her in charge of updating and organizing the website, a role that she still fulfills.
2008 – NISCA President Lanny Landtroop being interviewed by Swimming World’s Brent Rutemiller
Once Diving applications went online, AA Diving Chair Don Mason was doing much less paperwork. The other All America Chairs were jealous! The next program to go online was All America Swimming, followed a few years later by Academic All America and Scholar Team. Finally, just this year, All America Water Polo has also gone on-line with the applications. Each program presented their own unique challenges to create the online application portal. Upgrades and improvements were added as each application has moved online. The system is still evolving to meet the needs of the users and the Chairs processing the applications.
NISCA/IST National Dual Meet Program
IST is also a proud sponsor of the NISCA National Dual Meet Program. The National Dual Meet program uses Power Points to rank teams in 9 different classes. The classes are based on school size and whether they are public or private. Our MEETWARE software allows you to automatically generate an entry, as well as make manual changes as you see fit. You can print the entry directly from MEETWARE and send it to the National Dual Meet Chairperson for consideration. Eventually, even that program will probably be going online.
Not a member of NISCA? You can join online. The NISCA membership year begins on August 1st and expires on July 31st. If you join NISCA starting on June 16th, you will get an extra month and a half of membership. Mark your calendars and join NISCA on June 16th . Be part of the only professional organization specifically for high school aquatics coaches.
IST is a proud partner of NISCA. We support their efforts “To Educate…. To Honor… To Serve” high school coaches around the country. Volunteers run NISCA. They support high school swimming, diving and water polo athletes and coaches around the country. We think they do an outstanding job and we are happy to help them achieve their mission.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving!
Are you looking for a Christmas gift for your coaching staff? Look no further than a Bluetooth enabled pace clock. IST’s SWIMCLOCKBT is our popular rugged pace clock with a Bluetooth connection built in. Download the app onto your Android or iPhone and program your pace clock. You can run in Timer mode, Game Clock Mode, EZ Mode or Workout Mode.
Clock mode runs allows you to stop, start and reset a continuous count clock or sound the horn at the touch of a button. Game Clock mode allows you to count up or down to a set time, then sounds the horn when the time is reached. You can also stop or reset the clock or sound the horn with the touch of a button. EZ Mode allows you to enter an amount of repetitions, a time and whether you want to count up or down. The horn will sound each time an interval starts, and at the end of the number of intervals the clock will go blank. You can stop or reset the clock or sound the horn with the touch of a button.
In Workout Mode you can enter sets with up to 99 repeats and an unlimited number of intervals. Run the set right from that screen, or save it and combine an unlimited number of sets into a workout. Our First Scoreboard is 26 years old and still working!
That’s right, our very first scoreboard has been in continuous use for 26 years in November. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?
Our Scoreboard Origin Story
When Eve Julian (our Sales and Support Specialist) was swimming in high school, the scoreboard at the high school pool caught on fire. Her dad Dick Farnsworth (President of IST) was on the committee to raise money for a replacement. In 1991, the only scoreboards on the market for swimming were the solenoid flipper boards. Dick was frustrated with the high price and lack of information on the available scoreboards. Fortunately, he owned an engineering company and had just finished up a project using a new product called LED’s. Working with his business partner, Dick designed and built the very first Alphanumeric scoreboard for swimming. It was the first one to be able to display both names and times. To make it easier for Eve’s swim coach to interface with the scoreboard he wrote a software package called SWIMWARE, which ran on a computer. SWIMWARE would later evolve into our current MEETWARE and TIMEWARE software packages.
The project was supposed to be a one-off, just for Ottawa Hills. However, a visiting team parent saw the scoreboard and said, “I must have one of those, where did you get it?” He talked Dick into producing more, and it became a second company. Both the industrial engineering company (Industrial Service Technology) and the swim timing company (International Sports Timing) are going strong today.
How do our scoreboards last so long?
Our scoreboards are designed to last. Industrial environments can be as harsh as pool environments, so Dick used his prior experience to build a product that would stand up to the environment. We use gold connectors whenever possible and we conformal coat the circuit and LED boards to keep the moisture off the components. The boards are designed so that you can still use the scoreboard, even if one panel is removed. That makes repairs easy. IST is committed to making a long-lasting product, and we work very hard to make sure that we don’t obsolete parts, especially for our scoreboards. Even if you have a component fail, we can repair it. Every few years, the 26-year-old board has one or two panels that don’t come on, but a quick fix and it is back up and running!
After a while, the environment can get to even the best electronic equipment. Our scoreboards are designed so that a lot of the repairs can be completed by a building maintenance person, or even a team parent. Replacing connectors and scoreboard panels is quick and easy to do, and if you get stuck help is only a phone call away! We’re also happy to come to you and do the repairs, if that is what you prefer.
The scoreboards last as long as they do because we know that a scoreboard is the biggest investment that you can make for your parents. A team with an already tight budget shouldn’t have to replace their scoreboard every 5 to 7 years. It should be a permanent fixture in your facility for years to come. Our scoreboards, and really all of our products, are designed that way on purpose.
We are very fortunate to have some loyal and long-time customers. Often, we get to see them at the clinics that we go to. Sometimes that is the only time that we talk to them, they hardly ever call for help! When they do call, we get them back up and running in no time flat.
Some of our customers were nice enough to send us testimonials about our products, people and service. Check out the new testimonials page on our website.
If you would like to add your story to our testimonials page, please send your comments or videos to email@example.com. We would love to hear from you!
Occasionally, a team upgrades their equipment or moves out of their facility and needs to sell equipment. When that happens, we list it on our Used Equipment page. Do you have something you want to sell? Send a photo of the item, brief description, price, location and contact information to firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll post your listing and have interested buyers contact you directly to arrange payment and pickup/shipping of the item.
Thinking of upgrading from a console to an IST system? We’ll list your existing equipment here too. You’d be surprised how many people are looking for a reliable backup console at a cheap price!
IST’s pace clocks have been favorites of coaches for years. What’s not to love? Our pace clocks have a 5 year warranty, they’re solid and dependable and they are programmable with an additional programming pendent. Plus they are bright and easy to see. Even, we’ve been told, in the fog across a 50M pool!
Well now our pace clocks are even better!
Now we have added Bluetooth technology to our clocks. You can run your pace clock with your Android or iPhone device. Simply download the app from the Google Play Store or from the Apple App Store, pair your phone to the clock and you have a powerful workout tool in the palm of your hand. In fact, it’s like having another assistant coach on your deck.
The app features 4 different modes. TIMER is a basic stopwatch function. GAME CLOCK allows you to count up or down for a set time period so you can run a game of water polo for fun after practice. EZ MODE allows you to create a quick and simple set consisting of the number of repeats and a time (i.e. 10 @ 1:00). Additionally, WORKOUT MODE allows you to create more complex sets with multiple intervals and combine those into a workout which can be run at the push of a button.
You can store an unlimited number of sets and workouts. Sets are stored by category and name and workouts are stored by name so you can find everything easily.
If writing sets on your phone doesn’t appeal to you, there is an easier way. You can export your sets and workouts from our WORKWARE workout software and import them into the phone app. This allows you to write the sets on your computer and run them on your phone.
Already have an IST clock?
No problem! You can purchase a Bluetooth adapter that will plug into any IST Pace Clock (2 or 4 digit) and get the same functionality as the clock with the built in Bluetooth!
We have released the iPhone version of the app on the Apple App Store. For a limited time the app is FREE. Offer good through July 31st, 2017.
Also, buy a Bluetooth pace clock now and you will get a copy of our WORKWARE software for only $35 (MSRP $350). This offer is good through August 31st, 2017.
